I'm not afraid of anything...
I heard this song while judging the NATS musical theatre auditions on the west side earlier this fall. I love it. :) What do you think? Singer's not too bad, either, huh? What do you hear?
I hear Christen Chenowith, but that's just me. she has a great voice. vibrato all in there. she has that bright style of Chenowith, and I love the song!
I love this song. It's so cool, especially the beginning. the ending is sort of a determined sadness, while the beginning is more the determined, confident, and dare I say proud part. One of the songs where I appreciate the lyrics in the verses more than the chorus (surprisingly). Julia
So I could tell from the first few notes that this was a Jason Robert Brown song... he has such a distinct sound... or am I just a total nerd? Anyway, I enjoyed the song and the acting that the singer did a lot. She did a really great job of telling the story with feeling and made it seem like it was more than just words and notes to her.
However, I think her vocals were a little over-done, for lack of a better word. Her vibrato was really great at first, but it took over the sound, making it sound clean and more... over-done.I might just be being picky, but I think vibrato should be used sparingly or it loses it's allure.
I think there was also some room for belting in this number but she seemed to stick with more of a head voice than a chest voice belt which still sounds good, but isn't quite as powerful. It took away a bit from the great acting she was doing.
Overall acting gets a thumbs-up, vocals get a great by most standards, but not my favorite.
